Most alternative education schools have strict rules about who can join and when, but at our school, every young person between the ages of 14 and 19 years can attend if the school is able to support their educational needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our students historically do not arrive at BSEC \u201cschool ready.\u201d As survivors of intergenerational oppression, they experience barriers to wellbeing that include racism, abuse, and extended periods of unstable housing. In many cases, our students have lived for long periods without positive adult role models, adequate financial resources, or good mental health. The pressure of having to manage so many challenges often results in them choosing to drop out of school when challenged or to demonstrate below-average academic performance relative to age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our alternative education program offers many qualities like a family.\u00a0 The school accepts students wherever they are in their journey and offers a program that is flexible and diverse enough to respond to changing circumstances. This welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment can help our students develop a sense of hope that they may thrive in their lives after high school. These classes offer students alternative pathways to completing their high-school diplomas. The options include:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Co-Curricular Options<\/h3>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Drop-In Physical \u2013Education<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Success Coaching<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Theatre Appreciation<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Animal Wellness Group<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Yoga<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Gender and Sexuality Alliance<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Improvisational Drama<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Massage Therapy<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Indigenous cultural activities \u2013 daily smudging, pipe ceremony, sweat lodge ceremony, traditional beadwork, and conversational Cree.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, our school has services and supports in place to help students in crisis find a way into learning. The following services or affiliated services to our students in a constant effort to make it easy for our students to attend our alternative education programming:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Student Services<\/h3>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Psychoeducational Assessment<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Student Success Coach<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Emotional and Behavioral counselling<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Student Funding Supports<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Access to Alberta Health Services through the Indigenous Wellness Clinic<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Sharing Circles (CALM)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Youth Support Worker (for assistance with housing and legal matters)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[1] At this time, due to what we determine to be a high potential risk of COVID transmission, we have discontinued student work in areas related to cooking or cleaning in the building.
